اهداف اولیه این بررسی آزمایش، شناسائی ارتباط روانی - اجتماعی مادر، با انتظارات غیرواقعی از کودک، توان بالقوه تنبیه بی مورد او و بررسی ارتباط این عوامل با رفتار کودک بود. جهت تحقیق، از روش مقطعی در دو گروه استفاده شد. یک گروه شامل بیست مادر با درآمد کم بود که کودکان پیش دبستانی آنها به دلیل تنبیهات بدنی و غفلت والدین بالاخص مادر، به یک موسسه مراقبتهای خانوادگی ارجاع داده شده بودند.
